Enrollment

Enrollment process

If you are already a member of the APWU Health Plan’s High Option, you can elect the Medicare Advantage enhanced level of benefits (UnitedHealthcare Group Medicare Advantage (PPO) plan), at any time by calling UnitedHealthcare at 1-855-383-8793 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. local time, 7 days a week. TTY users, call 711.

If you are not yet a member of the APWU Health Plan’s High Option, you must first enroll in the APWU Health Plan High Option (Enrollment Codes: 471, 472, 473) with the Office of Personel Management (OPM) by going online at https://retireefehb.opm.gov/ or calling the OPM Retirement Information Center at 888-767-6738.

If the Open Season enrollment deadline has passed, you may not be able to enroll in the APWU Health Plan High Option a plan until the next enrollment period, unless you qualify for a Qualifying Life Event.

Who is eligible to enroll in the plan?

  • You may enroll in the Medicare Advantage enhanced benefits once enrolled in the APWU HP High Option code with OPM
  • You have both Medicare Part A & Part B primary
  • You are retired from a federal agency
  • You are a United States citizen or are lawfully present in the United States
  • You do NOT have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), with limited exceptions
  • You complete a telephonic application for enrollment in the APWU HP Medicare Advantage Plan

What if the enrollment deadline has passed?

If the Open Season enrollment deadline has passed, you may not be able to enroll in the APWU Health Plan High Option until the next enrollment period, unless you qualify for a Qualifying Life Event.

It's important to enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B when you first become eligible, during the Initial Enrollment Period. Medicare Part B requires a monthly premium payment for coverage, which is determined by when you enroll. In most cases, premium rates increase by 10 percent for each full 12-month period that you could have had Part B, but were not enrolled.
